Old Testament examples. Again we see this is not something new and
strange that Paul was presenting.
a. Abraham. Rom. 4:1-5, 9-22. Cf. Matt. 1:1 - David and
Abraham.
(1) By faith, not by works. v. 1-5. Eph. 2:8-9; Gal. 2:16.
(2) By faith, not by circumcision. v. 9-12.
(a) While in uncircumcision Abraham was justified by
faith.
(b) Circumcision--a sign or seal.
(c) Abraham is the father of all who believe, whether
circumcised or uncircumcised.
(3) By faith, not by law. v. 13-22.
(a) The promise not by law but by faith.
(b) By faith Abraham became the father of us all.
b. David. Rom. 4:6-8.
Psalm 32:1-2. Expressed negatively. The Lord will not
impute sin.
3. Application to Ourselves of Justification by Faith. Rom. 4:23-25.
a. Righteousness imputed to us.
If we believe on Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the
dead. The Death of Christ - delivered for our offences.
The Resurrection of Christ - raised again for our
justification.
